A Warm Read that Challenges and Nurtures
Mickey Grooters, Professor of English Literature, Michigan college

If you are looking for a book that shows the tensions between the real and the "expected," between the inner and the outer, between "chasing God" and "being chased" by God and then resolves those tensions by giving a spiritual vision of wholeness that embraces the paradoxes, then this book is for you. That is not to suggest that Chasing God is a metaphysical or philosophically dense treatise on life. The way the author writes about her relationships with family and friends; about the birth of her son; about the growing romance with her second husband ring so true that the reader experiences the relationship as well. Chasing God is a journey through one woman's life. It is a book written with clarity and beauty.

Cunningham is particularly strong when she describes places. The reader is with her in her high school in Wisconsin, with her in the convent, with her in Spain, with her as she races to a doctor with her new friend Jerry who is suddenly and unexpectedly ill. Cunningham's reflections on being ill, herself, with cancer and her subsequent change in feeling about folks who are not fully well are worth the price of the book.

Shirley Cunningham offers us a lovely feast with her selection of eleven Holy Women. Her passion for their voices and wisdom entices the reader on. Recommended to crack open the ‘door within’ even further.
— Christine Valters Paintner, PhD, REACH author of illuminating the Way: Embracing the Wisdom of Monks and Mystics.
Shirley Cunningham has expertly woven history, background, and experience together as she introduces these Holy Women. Through these stories, each one reaches out of history to take the reader’s hand so she, too, may feel that presence and be kissed by God. I am loving what I read!
— Rev. Amanda Peterson, director of Pathways of Grace: A Spiritual Life Center, M. Div., United Church of Christ.
An excellent reflection on the power of holy women to transform lives. In the great tradition of the Catholic faith, models of faith and courage can guide our way through life’s challenges. Kudos to Shirley Cunningham for this powerful book.

This book is like having a mini retreat with each holy woman. Their spirits spoke to Shirley as she birthed their amazing stories and now they have spoken to me through her words. They come alive as real people with lives and challenges not so different from mine. There are many suggestions to help one connect with these courageous women and to gather strength from them. Thank you Shirley for giving us this treasure.

I find this retreat lingers in my heart and continues to inspire me to hold fast as a daughter of God sharing in the legacy of these holy women. Joan of Arc in myclassroom helps me know when to stand firm! Joyful, prayerful, and creative moments of this retreat were balm to my soul and continue to distill each day as I choose ways to follow in the spirit-led footsteps of these holy women. Their stories are full of inspiration.
— Gail Hartman
Kissed by God: Holy Women Create! was a place where holy women from the past spoke and encouraged us to see ourselves like them, as powerful creations loved by God. Women from the Bible and women of Christian history came to life as ‘real people,’ struggling with the challenges of living their call, just as we experience our challenges. I continue to process and apply things that came to light. I am carrying my load in a healthier way with a sense of acceptance and courage.

...this is the class that inspired me to paint my inner queen standing on the back of a raven...the class was very insightful for me and others. One might even say ‘cathartic.’

...Shirley’s art is stunning...her use of color amazing. She has the vision and the talent to create beauty.
...an important part of the inspiration for the Audrey’s Angels service to elders project really came to me when I took a workshop with Shirley and I’m sure her book and art work can move others to follow their own callings as her earlier work inspired me.
— Founder of Audrey’s Angels, Phoenix, AZ
...Shirley is a creative force today...a writer, workshop leader, spiritual director, certified counselor, but the role she embraces with her heart and soul is artist. Her pilgrimages have impacted her art as evidenced by her images of the feminine divine. Her art has scope and depth.
