Every once in awhile, one should ask one’s self about love. One should also inquire about the possibilities of power! Maybe you should write a couple of poems today, too! Read these and you can decide.
HOW TO BE A QUEEN
Put on my crown.
Look around for my ermine robe.
Gather my council.
Tell them how to proceed in running the affairs of the land.
Fill my pockets with golden coins and distribute them to the poor nearby.
Send forth an edict forbidding television.
Gather my subjects and proclaim a holiday from complaints
which is to be filled with–
jigs and reels,
colorful dancing costumes,
drum rolls and piping flutes.
Let the stars know they are to shine each night
Except when the Goddess of the Night
brings her luminous moon out from behind the clouds.
Dispatch my navy to all foreign ports
Carrying the riches needed by each nation’s children:
This is how to be a Queen.
Why delight in empty days?
When the end of
Love’s song kills
Kiss that limit
in your soul–
–that sweet healing kiss
will push wide
the gentle door
of your heart
to Love’s avalanche.
